Overnight, in Dandenong South, our two main albatross are being laser cut into being from a large sheet of stainless steel by “the best programmer” on the floor. As our work for #Realm takes wing, we feel very fortunate to have found the perfect people for the job. They seem as excited about our project as we are, and we are looking forward to the reveal. Cut, stack, clip, done. Tonight, a workshop at Bunjil Place Gallery. All you need to make a wrap around book, a four-stab stitch Japanese book, and a tiny folded book. Materials and nouse. (Presented as part of @library_vic’s exhibition, ‘Self Made: zines and artist books’.)

There once was a kitten who could fit in your palm, but that was a long time ago. Our #RSPCA foster kitten, Frida-Mouse, grows stronger, bigger, faster, day by day. She can leap from work surfaces work surface now, and insert worded code into emails. She is nearing the end of her stay with us, and we’re sure this little speedster is going to thrive. Citrus, Blush, Lime. Labelling our jewel-coloured Perspex offcuts on the factory floor so the right albatross silhouette is cut from the right sheet, and admiring the industrial laser cutter which will conjure our two large stainless steel albatross while we are at it. ‘A Weight of Albatross’, on #Marginalia: http://www.graciahaby.com/home/2018/4/15/a-weight-of-albatross

To the suburbs in a red fire engine, with a book-burning fireman. Cutting it fine once again (wait for me, Melbourne Cinémathèque). The future is now, said François Truffaut in ‘Fahrenheit 451’ (1966), and I seek refuge with the Book People. I’ll embody Ali Smith’s ‘There but for the’, a strange place book I’m currently reading.

Sunday evening at ours, not unlike this night in 1938, captured by Morvay Kinga. (Something about the creases in the pyjamas, and the expression of all three, is suggestive of nighttime rather than morning, but you can, of course, read it as you wish.)

Figuring out the centre of gravity. Allowing the flow of force to be uninterrupted. Playing with the strength of a circle, making the outside lines smooth curves in place of sharp angles. Placing internal pieces to follow the line of the form while not compromising the material’s strength, and perhaps call to mind a skeleton as well as ingested debris. In order to make a weight of #albatross soar, engineering is required. In order to make them hover mid-air, and be safe and secure, laser-cut from sheets of coloured #Perspex, such things need to be factored in and revised.

As we tweak our albatross, widening gaps within and simplifying awkward nooks, this challenge is one we are relishing. To be suspended from a single fixing, our (intended) weight of albatross cannot weigh more than 50 kilograms. They need to be durable and lightfast, and not clack into one another. They need to move on swivels, without compromising the materials’ strength. They need to be high overhead so you cannot touch them. Their #silhouettes have been organised in tiers from overhead (revealing their undercarriage) to eye-line and a little below (revealing their backs and the top of their wings). ‘A Weight of Albatross’ is a commission we are currently working on for Maroondah City Council.

We only took a handful of photos of Frida at the beginning of her stay with us, but those we did take look nothing like the Frida who sits before us now. She is an entirely different kitten. She no longer looks wasted at the hips. She looks strong, with barely a hint of her former limp. As her hind leg fracture continues to heal, she is running, rolling, pouncing, leaping, as a kitten should. And she chases Lenni, and he, her, from one end of the house to the other, day and night. Once or twice, when Frida has gone to bed, Lenni has tapped on her door and meowed, as if hoping to continue their cat-and-mouse antics. And as they gallop about the house we think of our friendly vet, Craig, who said there was no easy way to get a cat to exercise. Frida-mouse has become Lenni’s tiny trainer, and Louise and I are the logs on the track for the athletes to jump over. Lenni and Frida, both, becoming healthier each day. After yoga and relaxation, when everyone has gone, we make the most of floor space we don’t have at home to lay out ‘A Weight of Albatross’ (with thanks to @pasadenamansions). The bits cutaway, Lenni, we’ll have to do something (else) with those. (Jewelled remnants on #theworkingtable, and a frosted #Perspex order successfully placed. (Perspex rep) Dorothy found us so many large, coloured offcuts that if we had tails, we’d curl them too. Puzzle managed.)

Making them soar. It’s proving quite the puzzle. Making them #Perspex. Dusk is here. (Image credit: ‘Buller’s Albatross and chick in the sun after a stormy afternoon’ (detail), and ‘An albatross chick is fed every 1–14 days by both parents, their down and fat enable them to withstand the cold, wet and long fasting periods’ (detail), photographed by Jean-Claude Stahl, Tongarewa Museum of Zealand, published on the Te Papa blog, ‘Hautere/Solander Island, The Capital of Albatrosses’; either side of a Perspex frosted colour chart.) #WIP

George Mallory once wrote (in ‘Climbing Everest’) “If you cannot understand that there is something in man[kind] which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer #joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to live. That is what life means and what life is for.” And joy-scaling to the hilt is our 15-week-old #RSPCA foster kitten as she claws her way up all manner of household surfaces in the spirit of a freestyle rock climber. Frida is fearless. There is no holding her back. She is also terribly fast. (Image credit: Carole Lombard from ‘Hollywood Cats: Photographs From the John Kobal Foundation’) #cats

This morning, our prototype acrylic albatross — let’s call him, Gus — completed their migration from @onlinelasercutting (thank-you) to our door. We plan on making our final albatross from different coloured sheets of frosted acrylic reminiscent of sea-worn surfaces, and the shapes hollowed out will also be different (in their configuration and form), but this being a prototype is for ironing out such wrinkles in the wings. It is lovely working with acrylic once more, using the sheet as you would a piece of paper.
