”There are believed to be fewer than 1,000 black-throated finches still alive, with the largest population surviving in the path of Adani's Carmichael mine site. More than 1,400 artworks of the bird have been mailed to politicians, including the Queensland Premier, Prime Minister and the state's Environment Minister. Literature is a part of life. It is not something “special”. All of life is nothing but a poem, a movement…. Here is what I wanted to say. I have a fever. And this is why I love the painting of the Delaunys, full of sun, of heat, of violence. Mme Delaunay has made such a beautiful book of colours that my poem is more saturated with light than is my life. That’s what makes me happy. Besides, think that this book should be two meters high! Moreover, that the edition should reach the height of the Eiffel Tower! — Blaise Cendrars (the pen name for Frédéric Louis Sauser), in 1913, on ‘La Prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France’, a collaborative book project by Sonia Delaunay, quoted from the German magazine Der Sturm A “simultaneous book”. When not cleaning up straight quotes and making them curly and adding new bits of CSS code to our site (hello, Remove Hyphens on Mobile; pleased to meet you, Remove ‘X’ on Announcement Bar), we walked and encountered beauty on both the beach and the streets of North Carlton. Removing dead links in the archives made us long for the early days of blogging and the closeness of community. For the enthusiasm of a shared experience over style and polish. And yet revisiting past projects, though an important part of any journey, also made us feel sheepish. And joined to this the feeling that would anyone even notice if our apostrophes were sometimes straight where they should be curly. Looking back can be tough. This is Oscar (RSPCA Shelter ID No. 913120). He is 11 years old, and patiently waiting (East Burwood) for a retirement home with no other cats or dogs. We met him briefly today at the shelter before our little #RSPCA (#fosterfail?) #fostercat’s appointment to check how his tail is healing post surgery. He is on antibiotics and painkillers for a further ten days, and we need to clean the tail wound twice daily with saline, and apply a cream. As with our previous fosters, he is proving a most obliging patient. The RSPCA are currently looking for foster carers. A bevy of black swans circled our car parked near to the lake’s edge. It was my first encounter with a black swan, nose to beak, separated only by a wind-up wind-down window pane. I would have been no taller than one of the swans, had I’ve been out of the car. I remember feeling awestruck by their scale, their very presence, and yet as I was four-years-of-age, or thereabouts, is this a later addition stitched to a memory derived from family folklore? My Mum recalled one of the swans hopped up on the car’s bonnet, but wonders now if such a spectacle is likely. A small car buried beneath a mountain of feathered bodies, it is almost a cartoon image — better yet, a cinematic one — when viewed from a human perspective. In territorial union to our intrusion, the swans rallied, and looped for me a definitive impression of swans, lakes, and Tchaikovsky. The swans of my memory and family folklore were not so unlike the hissing, awe-inspiring Chimeras within Jean-Christophe Maillot’s LAC, a modern telling of Swan Lake, performed with attack by the renowned Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Imposing, glorious, memorable. In LAC, Maillot, together with writer Jean Rouaud, resurrected “these buried experiences”, albeit against a more “Machiavellian, family backdrop …. to present a ballet of contrasts. The change from animal into human being infuse[d] the entire work and question[ed] our own nature. We believe that we differ from animals because of our ability to make choices. But is this all we are capable of? …. Its two known remaining strongholds are in the Townsville area, where it occupies land that is being carved up for residential development, and the Galilee Basin region where numerous coal mines are proposed — including Adani’s controversial Carmichael coal mine. The Queensland Government has approved Adani’s groundwater management plan clearing Adani to start construction work on the controversial Carmichael coal mine. The Galilee Basin is the most important #habitat left for the Southern Black-throated Finch, with significant populations discovered at Adani’s Carmichael mine site in 2013.
