From the Musée Marmottan-Monet with its curious collection of bequeathed Monets and Corots to the indigo juice and alcohol varnish of Sigmar Polke at Foundation Louis Vuitton; from civic activities on the lake which looked like the paintings seen earlier on the gallery walls or studied during art school years to security guards like performance artists; from architecture as art and backdrop to pose before to a Senegalese loom with branches for supports at the other end of invention; from dogs enjoying their off-lead time in the former royal hunting grounds to the automatons of the 19th century at the Musée des Arts et Métiers (which we can see from our bedroom window); round and round, all day long. Though we could have sat before Christian Boltanski’s ‘Animitas’, a 13-hour film comprised of a single, fixed frame shot taken from sunrise to sunset, featuring the meditative sound and visual of 800 Japanese bells tinkling and bobbing in the wind, we zipped, traipsed, and sauntered, from one place to the next. Our second Saturday in Paris, nothing if not varied. It took 19,000 Ductal panels to make the “iceberg” form of Frank Gehry’s modern day palace to 1 hound to greet us on the riverbank to make today a very fine day indeed. #Paris #onfoot #FrankGehry #greenspace #FoundationLouisVuitton

At the Musée d’Orsay (@museeorsay), as I imagined how it would feel inside the works of Sisley and Pissarro, a reminder that transference is not one way. In the Princess’ Salon, through the Prince’s Bedroom, making chandeliers click-clack and floorboards talk, the object I covet turns out to be a ‘crochets’ (‘Dictionnaire de Furetière’, 1960), but all I can find of it online is the process of interlocking loops of yarn or thread with a crochet hook. (A ‘crochets’ is a little wooden shelf, worn like a backpack, used to ferry a stack of archives. By little means comfortable, but by many means covetable, to my eyes, at least. Drop anchor. Deep down. Draw 360°. The desire to now wrap and unify all our books in paper, title them with texta, and cinch them closed will prove hard to resist. Equally, the desire to draw our current view as a circle, and later bind books like solid, banded, powdered forms worthy of being called tomes. Who knows, maybe we will. Maybe we won’t. Standing before a photograph of a black cat basking on the tiles (Kardas, 1898–1978, Untitled [cat], c. 1925–30). Across their back, the shadow of a window falls like a cross. It is like the black cross of Kasimir Malévitch (1878–1935), hanging on the wall opposite. “Generating a certain dynamic .... of uncertain edges”, in the #Pompidou. In the collections moderne, room after room, you, me, and “a slight tilt and the precarious equilibrium” of all things. Originally “made up of books from the King’s Cabinet as well as duplicates from the national library and items confiscated during the French Revolution”, in one of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle’s many library spaces (@le_museum), we turn the pages of the books left on the table as if in wait of a reader before making our own selection. Inside the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, a #platypus tickles the belly of their companion, making them curl into a furred letter ‘c’. In a cabinet nearby, a #lynx holds court, and sports the look of someone in on the joke. Elsewhere, a wolf attempts to extinguish a light with a quick snap-close, a #thylacine looks sheepish, and inside of a dog it may be too dark to read, but if you’re eagle-eyed you’ll spot Louise. #Paris #cabinets #collection #JardindesPlantes #MuséumNationaldHistoireNaturelle
While cleaning my teeth and thinking about Delacroix and how he captured so brilliantly the twisting, rippling, caught-in-a-spring, in between movements of big cats and horses, I spy a black cat on the windowsill, quietly watching my own bathroom activities. I spit out the paste into the sink, look back out the window, and the cat is gone. In 2009, I made an artists’ book, ‘At the Château de la Malmaison’ tigers roam’, featuring Josephine’s Malmaison, and in 2018, I walked through the very rooms I had placed a cheetah in the antechamber and a wallaby in the wardrobe of the emperor. It has been a very nice loop. 🐅 “Josephine’s garden at #Malmaison included many species of animals collected from #Baudin’s voyages, including #kangaroos, #emus and black swans. The first kangaroo arrived in 1804, only one of three on board Le Géographe to survive. Others were donated to Josephine over time, but they did not respond well to the European climate and at the time of Josephine’s death at Malmaison in 1814, only one remained alive. Behind the curve of a polar bear’s back, I spy a case of mallards in wait. Beneath the table, a golden monkey sports the exclamation of treasure found, and around the corner, a unicorn is caught in a downpour of spirits. On the chair, a curl of a fox, and over there, a leopard pas de deux. Before leaving the Musée de la Chase et de la Nature, the friendly security guard alerts us to something we might have missed near to the Salon des Chiens. Heighten the colour of the first emotion, Bonnard, and paint from a memory of a woman and her dog as they passed by you as you sat on a bench in the Jardin du Luxembourg eating an unsatisfying icecream (for there exists such a thing). Before ‘Saint Jérôme en méditation’, a cleaner draws large sweeping strokes across the floor with his soft broom, performing his own kind of meditation. Watching his movements in accord with the broom’s glide, his actions enhances my own reading of the surrounding works. Waiting before ‘Sainte Madeleine’, a cleaner sits, a spray bottle of polish and cloth in hand. The Musée du Louvre just before it closes is a beautiful theatre of shift change harmony as I imagine the paintings prepare for their repose, having spent the day restoring faith in the role of art. #Paris #Louvre #painting #JanProvost #JanMassys #LucasdeLeyde
To close the windows and draw the curtains upon such a bedroom window view seems unlikely. Rather, we leave them open, allowing the view to pour into the room. We have moved from our temporary nest in rue de Chabrol (remembered in the mind at the time of booking as the ‘shambling opera’ (Hotel Chabrol Opera)) to begin our part of Australia Print Workshop’s French Connections project.
