BAT MASSIVE

Our artwork has often, and increasingly so, featured animals and commented on nature and how it is not something separate, but a part of the whole. Not unlike our home and Tiny but Wild shelter interconnectedness, everything is gloriously entangled. And from this, we felt it was not enough for us to make work about wildlife without actually also doing something more hands on. In doing something more hands on, our understanding has deepened and our awareness of the interconnectedness of all things has grown. It is also something we thought we could do well. Looking after animals, from our home, round the clock; it just fits. Like many things, rescues or wildlife care, it is about something bigger than the self.

Grey-head flying foxes can restore corridors of forest growth, if we let them do their thing. We cannot thrive unless they do, and how lucky are we to be connected to such an intelligent, social, cheeky, ancient, wise and spectacular species. How lucky are we in Melbourne/Naaarm to have these souls fly overhead every night, pollinating!

Drawing together some of our favourite things, BAT MASSIVE is a nocturnal celebration of connections between the human and non-human, and as a bonus, ticket proceeds go to Wildlife Victoria’s ongoing rescue and protection of native bats.

So wing your way there on Saturday the 16th of August. 2025, from 5pm.

As part of BAT MASSIVE, we were interviewed by Tee Mitchell for the event’s accompanying essay, World Builders, and spoke with Mary Gearin and Brian Nankervis on ABC Radio (Saturday Mornings, on Saturday 9th August, 2025) about caring for Grey-headed flying foxes and all thing wild and MASSIVE.

Abbotsford Convent, Wildlife Victoria and 3RRR present BAT MASSIVE A Nocturnal Assembly of Art, Ecology and Ascension.

As dusk descends upon the Convent and the neighbouring colony of Grey-headed Flying Foxes fly out across the Birrarung to feed for the night, BAT MASSIVE begins.

BAT MASSIVE explores human and non-human experiences in exile; a nomadic reverie of the places we always return to.

BAT MASSIVE moves through a special bat crossing, punctuated by sound and light installations, live music performances, immersive projections, pop-up bars and food curated by community providores and more.
